Nested in the Tigris-Euphrates valley, once called Messopotamia,
Iraq was the site of one of the world's earliest civilizations.
The Sumerian city-states from 3,000 BC originated the culture
later developed by the Semitic Akkadians, Babylonians and
Assyrians. The Persians and later the Moslem Arabs conquered the area and
founded Baghdad in the 8th and 9th centuries. Britain secured a
mandate over Iraq after World War I and in 1932 Independence came
under a monarchy. In 1958 a republic was created which quickly
became friendly with the Soviet Union. In 1972 an aid package
was signed with the Soviets that led to military supplies and
several thousand Soviet advisors. In 1973, the Arab-Israeli war
led Iraq to send troops to aid Syria. On September 22, 1980, Iraqi
claims to the Shatt al-Arab waterway bordering Iran led Iraq to
bomb airfields in Iran. The war continued until August 1988.
Israeli airplanes destroyed a nuclear reactor near Baghdad on
June 7, 1981, claiming that it could be used to produce nuclear
weapons. @
